Midnight Oil Seminar in Dallas and New Freebies

Midnight Oil Productions logo

My friends, Len and Jason, from Midnight Oil Productions are coming to town (at least my town, that is).

Trietsch Memorial UMC in Flower Mound, will host “Creative Experiential Worship: Culture Art Team Technology,” a Nov. 16 one-day workshop featuring Len Wilson and Jason Moore of Midnight Oil Productions.

If you’ve ever seen an excruciating PowerPoint presentation in worship then you know that for many churches new media has nothing to do with new energy and creativity in worship.

The real story in worship now is not the use of screens, but how screens and other forms of media come together to create powerful experiences of God. These four sessions, based on our books of the same names, invite you to come explore what happens next with our latest thinking on metaphor, design and media creation, team planning, and much more.

Rediscover creativity. Experience real and memorable moments of worship.

Moore and Wilson are frequent seminar leaders and have spoken to thousands of church leaders in the last decade on harnessing digital media for ministry. Their newest book is Design Matters: Creating Powerful Imagery for Worship (Abingdon Press, 2006). They have authored Digital Storytellers: The Art of Communicating the Gospel in Worship (Abingdon, 2002) and The Wired Church: Making Media Ministry (Abingdon, 1999).

Trietsch UMC is located at 6101 Morriss Road.

Registration is through Midnight Oil. There are discounts for groups. Basic fee structure is: $109 (one), $89 each (2-4), and $69 each (5 or more). Log on to http://www.midnightoilproductions.com/seminar/ for more information.

A breakdown of the sessions contained in the workshop is as follows:

Session 1
Digital Storytellers: The Art of Communicating the Gospel in Worship

We in the church may have new media, but we have old mindsets. We are still stuck in an old world of textual analysis. If we can discover the power and potential of story and metaphor, we can transform how we communicate in worship.

Session 2
Design Matters: Creating Powerful Imagery for Worship

Creating powerful images for worship is not just for another congregation with more resources. Learn the basics for thinking in, and making, images, with our eight principles for design. Discover the power of creating, and customizing, images with our brief Adobe Photoshop demo.

Session 3
Taking Flight: Worship Design Teams That Work

Many have attempted to design worship with a team of people, only to discover that it is difficult to form a team that actually works. We’ll look at a series of obstacles that befall teams of sincere, hard working people, and explore through teaching and interactivity how to create worship design teams that take flight.

Session 4
The Wired Church: Making Media Ministry

The essential need-to-know information to establish, grow, and fortify your media ministry, including how to get started, resources, technical information, and more.

Live Audio Basics DVD

Live Audio Basics DVD

The “Live Audio Basics” course teaches practical, useful tips and techniques from the ground up with the “ordinary guy/gal” in mind. It covers the technical basics; signal path, microphones, equalization, etc. But just as important it covers things that are not just technical explanations, but “real world” topics like the personality differences between musicians and technicians, or the best and most effective way to communicate to the musicians on stage from behind the console.

This DVD includes a FREE BONUS RESOURCE CD-ROM full of vital information to help you reach that ‘next level’. Stay organized and inspired with these useful PDF print outs which include input lists, stage plots, signal path diagrams and a whole lot more.

Also included in this package is a FREE CD-ROM GAME “Audio Engineer Challenge” which allows you, the ‘contestant’, to answer a series of questions that when answered correctly eventually reaches the golden million point question that gives you the title ‘Audio Engineer’. Wow.

There’s still time to enter Granger’s Film Festival

GCC Film Fest
Granger Community Church (one of the most innovative churches in the country) hosts The Innovative Church Conference September 21-22. There is still time to sign up and there’s also still time to enter the Granger Film Festival.

FYI – Granger also offers a great resource website to all churches: WiredChurches.com (which I’ve used and supported for years). Check it out!

Media at Promise Keepers

Promise Keepers logo

Tonight I was able to attend the Promise Keepers gathering at the American Airlines Center here in Dallas. This arena, where the NBA’s Mavericks and the NHL’s Stars play was packed full of men of every size, age, color and background. Tonight’s message was on salvation and it looked like anywhere from 200 to 300 men walked down front to the altar to pray to receive Christ. It was a moving and special night of worship.

As a “Promise Keepers vet”, who has been to a few of these gatherings (including the unforgettable “Stand in the Gap” rally in Washington DC), I was thrilled to see that they made some much needed changes. The last couple of times that I had been the media was sad and the music was very dated. I was very impressed and excited to see their new PK7 worship band, that led modern worship with a nice edge. I was also impressed with how they are utilizing lighting, various screens of many different sizes and shapes and just the overall intergration of moving backgrounds and IMAG.

My final surprise of the evening came at the end when they showed the NOOMA video “Dust” (which is my favorite of the 13 NOOMA videos featuring Rob Bell). As someone very involved with media ministry and very aware of the resources that are available to the Church, I’ve often dreamed of seeing large events, conferences and seminars use these amazing videos (not just NOOMA, but videos or mini-movies in general), like so many churches around the world do. It was cool to sense the atmosphere in the room change as the video played and see how God used that video to encourage and inspire thousands of men in an arena. Major props to PK for staying relevant and open to new resources!

FYI – NOOMA’s lastest video “Rich“, which is their 13th video, is now available and shipping.
